About the Performers

Steve Alter, cello, studied with the Boston Symphony's Mischa Nieland while in graduate school and once was allowed to play several notes on Nieland’s 1699 Grancino cello. He plays chamber music regularly and has participated in at least 50 chamber music workshops.


Katherine Bukstein, viola, is a retired school strings and private studio teacher. Katherine is President of the Board of InterMusic SF, serves on the Boards of San Francisco Community Music Center, Peninsula Symphony and Young Chamber Musicians. She performs with the Peninsula Symphony and is an avid chamber musician.


Bill Horne, piano, a retired psychiatrist from Mill Valley, has played piano since age 6. He has enjoyed chamber music over 35 years in various workshops and performance venues. He is retired from boards of Associated Chamber Music Players and Intermusic SF, and remains active on the boards of Chamber Musicians of Northern California and Chamber Music Marin.


Carolyn Lowenthal, violin, studies with Mariko Smiley. She is on the boards of the Soiree Musicale, Chamber Music Marin, and Chamber Musicians of Northern California; plays in several orchestras, enjoys chamber music workshops, and playing viola.


Ching Shih, piano, was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She majored in Piano Performance and graduated with a Masters in Music from the University of Washington in 2003, then moved to the Bay Area in 2004. She joined the Fortnightly Music Club in 2007. She lives in San Francisco and enjoys performing classical music.
